The gasket between the cat-back and the midpipe is completely worn out. The problem I am experiencing is two fold. The springs allow the joint to flex, which is important, a rigid joint would crack/fail during normal use of the vehicle (no give). The joint between the rear catalytic converter and the cat-back is connected by two flanges with a spring and bolt kit. The Cat-back refers to all exhaust components behind the last catalytic converter. For this instructable we will focus on the joint between the rear exhaust pipe and the midpipe. Most people pushing serious power have a 5 speed aftermarket swap. The top image is a diagram of an exhaust system from a car much nicer than mine. The 6 speed is also much stronger than the 5 speed so for the dudes wanting 400whp that's the way to go.Are you stupid? Who the hell told you the 6 speed was more reliable? 5 speed is way more reliable. Depending on the track, the STI could be several seconds a lap faster. The 5 speed 2009 WRX was faster 0-60 than the 6 speed STI because it has nearly the same engine, weighs less, and requires one less shift. I think the +'s outweigh the -'s (in favor of the F) when comparing the FSTi with ISTi, but thats really based on a lot of factors like what you want to use it for ultimately and personal preferences. im sure from a competition level it is, but will mere mortals like us ever really notice? ive never owned an ISTi, is the DCCD and LSD that important when using it as a daily driver? (honest question, i really dont know). the STi conversion for the Forester is better than a IWRX, but maybe doesnt have all the bells and whistles of the ISTi but its damn close. With that said, i dont know if its possible to swap the ISTi drive train into a FSTi (ie: LSD, DCCD etc) but i dont see why not. but 1 spec that i did find is that the FSTi came from subaru claiming 320hp, which is more than they claimed for the ISTi. i dont see that the Japan FSTi came with the fancy center Diff control or the LSDs that the ISTis came with, but it may be that i just cant find it. the only other differences (that i can tell according to specs) from the factory STi forester in Japan is the 6spd and the Brembos from the STi. its a cheap conversion and makes for a much more fun daily driver, not to mention that you dont have to stop the conversion there. The 6 speed is also much stronger than the 5 speed so for the dudes wanting 400whp that's the way to go.well, i was talking just from the engine suspension point of view. If "realistically, does it really matter for daily driving?" why did you bring it up in the first place? The 6 speed is also much stronger than the 5 speed so for the dudes wanting 400whp that's the way to go.

do you really need all that stuff as a DD? to have a 300+ HP "angry toaster" daily driver that will give most sports cars a run for their money if not beat them while hauling the wife, kids, family pet and groceries would be a blast. You are the one that said STI. Same goes for all the other fancy acronyms you said. do you really need all that stuff as a DD? to have a 300+ HP "angry toaster" daily driver that will give most sports cars a run for their money if not beat them while hauling the wife, kids, family pet and groceries would be a blast. I know that the '04 came in a manual, albeit a 5 spd, but i remember reading somewhere that the 5 spd is actually faster than the 6spd (1/4 mile times of course), and realistically, does it really matter for daily driving? The 3.0 and 3.6L H6's have a 5EAT - and the VTD drive system.not the older ones. To make a Forester XT into an automatic WRX wouldn't be too expensive, but you'd still have the four speed automatic. A few people have done them, but it really only makes sense if you have a crashed STI as a donor. There are many differences in suspension components as well.

To upgrade to an STI would require adding front and rear LSD's as well as a six speed gearbox and DCCD. Run that past me again? The turbocharged XT Foresters are automatic only and have the smaller turbo and exhaust as in the 08 WRX.
